The importance of having the right judgement other than impressing on the need for ‘Safety First’ was stressed on the drivers and also those on the photo moto ahead of the start of PETRONAS Le Tour de Langkawi 2023 tomorrow.

The 27th edition of PETRONAS Le Tour de Langkawi 2023 will start tomorrow with Stage 1 from Kerteh to Kuala Terengganu for a race distance of some 187.4km.

At the briefing that was conducted by International Commissaire Sandro Coccioni from Italy, he said that it is the responsibility of the drivers and also those on the photo moto on the best course of action to take.

“Ultimately, the drivers have to decide for themselves on the best course of action to take with the emphasis not only on their safety but also that of the cyclists and others in the bubble,” said Coccioni.

“He said other than being patient, drivers and also the photo moto drivers need to practise good judgment so as to avoid unnecessary incidents during the race.”

With more than 1000 people being involved in the race this year, mobility through efficient management will be crucial as the organiser looks to improve and raise the standard of race security.

Prior knowledge of the routes will also be important for drivers, especially in areas like the feed zones, the intermediate sprints, the mountain sprints and also approaching the finish line.

“Knowing where to pass and where to stop will also help drivers tremendously for them to avoid being in unwanted situations,” he added.

He said that dangerous manoeuvres during the race may result in the offending driver being fined, removed from the race by the Commissaires, removed from another stage in the race or from another race altogether.

They may also be penalised by the UCI Disciplinary Commission or face legal action.
