KUALA LUMPUR: Teams heading to the 30th edition of Le Tour de Langkawi 2026 (LTdL2026) are gearing up across Europe before traveling to Malaysia for the eight-stage race scheduled from 27 September to 4 October.
While several outfits including Picnic PostNL, Equipo Kern Pharma, Caja Rural-Seguros RGA, Bardiani CSF-7 Saber and Burgos Burpellet-BH have submitted their initial six-rider rosters and reserves to the LTdL26 Secretariat, final team lists remain subject to change until team managers submit their confirmed entries a day before flag-off.
Since early August, top-tier WorldTeams such as XDS Astana and Picnic PostNL, alongside ProTeams including Tudor Pro Cycling, TotalEnergies, Bardiani, Unibet Rose Rockets, Caja Rural, Kern Pharma, and Burgos, have been competing in one-day races and stage events across Europe on the UCI WorldTour (UWT) and ProSeries calendars.
US-based ProTeam newcomer Modern Adventure Pro Cycling, sporting in their signature maroon kit, has also actively toured Europe to test their squad, build endurance and refine race pace.
LTdL26 Secretariat Chief Operating Officer (COO) Emir Abdul Jalal noted that these European outings serve as crucial testing grounds to select riders suited for LTdL26’s demands.
“LTdL26 presents a distinct test. Beyond the tropical heat, riders face three major summit finishes which is two Hors Category ascents at Cameron Highlands and Genting Highlands, alongside a Category 1 climb at Gunung Jerai.
“Every team uses their own assessment criteria to select riders who can navigate these obstacles while hitting specific objectives, whether aiming for the Individual General Classification, Team Overall, King of the Mountains or targeting flat stages with sprint specialists for the Points Classification,” said Emir.
Currently, five teams from the LTdL26 roster are competing in the Czech Tour, while six outfits joined the Arctic Race of Norway following appearances at the Donostia San Sebastian one-day classic (1 August) and the Tour de Pologne stage race (3 August).
Their race schedules continue through the Renewi Tour (Belgium) and the Lidl Deutschland Tour starting 19 August, followed by the season’s final Grand Tour, the Vuelta a Espana on 22 August.
Rider evaluations will extend into September at the Lloyd’s Tour of Britain (2 September), Skoda Tour of Luxembourg (16 September) and the CRO Race (22 September), all rated 2.ProSeries events.
Final tune-ups will take place at the GP Cycliste de Quebec and GP de Montreal one-day classics ahead of the UCI Road World Championships in Montreal.
Riders not selected for national team duty will head directly to compete in LTdL26.
Despite a schedule overlap between the 2026 UCI Road World Championships in Montreal, Canada, and LTdL26, Emir emphasized that participating teams are well-equipped to manage split rosters.
“Last year, the World Championships in Rwanda similarly overlapped with LTdL, but teams prepare well in advance with deep rosters exceeding 30 riders.
“Releasing select riders for national duty while fielding a fully fit, race-ready lineup for events like LTdL is standard operational procedure for these setups,” Emir added.
Emir anticipates last minute adjustments to initial entry lists before teams fly to Malaysia two to three days ahead of Stage 1 (Shah Alam to Kampar) on 27 September.
“We have received preliminary rosters, but experience shows these line-ups will continue to evolve right up until teams board their flights to Kuala Lumpur,” he noted.
Classified as a 2.ProSeries event covering a distance of 1,285.5km, LTdL2026 is co-organised by the Ministry of Youth and Sports (KBS) through the National Sports Council (MSN), with support from the Malaysian National Cycling Federation (MNCF).
